This paper assesses the extent to which Fairtrade, through its supply chain interventions, improves fairness in trade including the impact on producers and workers and provides recommendations to improve its impact on fairness in trade. The research focuses on a number of key Fairtrade value chains–tea, cocoa, bananas and flowers – from specific producing countries to the UK and Germany. It evaluates Fairtrade’s impact within Fairtrade certified value chains and beyond Fairtrade value chains. For both perspectives, the aim is to understand the various influencing factors.
