This report, “Moving the Bars”, reflects on how one program aimed to move the bars apart. The Cocoa Improvement Program (CIP) operated for four years from 2008-2012, with the aim of improving the sustainability of the global cocoa industry. Over the last five years, the cocoa industry has been completely transformed by a wave of corporate commitments to sustainability and supply chain investment. CIP was part of that bigger picture.
The objective of this study is to evaluate whether the program’s objectives have been met, to create insight in the lessons learned from the program and to formulate recommendations for succeeding programs and for similar programs in other production chains.
